چکیده
Recent numerical results for a model describing dispersive transport in ricepiles are explained by mapping the model to the depinning transition of an elastic interface that is dragged at one end through a random medium. The average velocity of transport vanishes with system size L as kyl , L22D , L20.23, and the avalanche size distribution exponent t 2 2 1yD . 1.55, where D . 2.23 from interface depinning. We conjecture that the purely deterministic Burridge-Knopoff “train” model for earthquakes is in the same universality class. [S0031-9007(96)00517-0]

Recent numerical results for a model describing dispersive transport in rice piles are explained by mapping the model to the depinning transition of an interface that is dragged at one end through a random medium. The average velocity of transport vanishes with system size L as < v >∼ L2−D ∼ L−0.23, and the avalanche size distribution exponent τ = 2 − 1/D ≃ 1.55, where D ≃ 2.23 from interface d...
متن کاملExact mapping of the stochastic field theory for Manna sandpiles to interfaces in random media.
We show that the stochastic field theory for directed percolation in the presence of an additional conservation law [the conserved directed-percolation (C-DP) class] can be mapped exactly to the continuum theory for the depinning of an elastic interface in short-range correlated quenched disorder. Along one line of the parameters commonly studied, this mapping leads to the simplest overdamped d...
متن کاملScaling Behavior of Driven Interfaces Above the Depinning Transition
We study the depinning transition for models representative of each of the two universality classes of interface roughening with quenched disorder. For one of the universality classes, the roughness exponent changes value at the transition, while the dynamical exponent remains unchanged. We also find that the prefactor of the width scales with the driving force. We propose several scaling relat...
متن کاملAbsorbing-state phase transitions in fixed-energy sandpiles
We study sandpile models as closed systems, with the conserved energy density zeta playing the role of an external parameter. The critical energy density zeta(c) marks a nonequilibrium phase transition between active and absorbing states. Several fixed-energy sandpiles are studied in extensive simulations of stationary and transient properties, as well as the dynamics of roughening in an interf...
متن کاملUniversality classes for interface growth with quenched disorder.
We present numerical evidence that there are two distinct universality classes characterizing driven interface roughening in the presence of quenched disorder. The evidence is based on the behavior of λ, the coefficient of the nonlinear term in the growth equation. Specifically, for three of the models studied, λ → ∞ at the depinning transition, while for the two other models, λ → 0. PACS numbe...
